The American Platinum Eagle is one ounce of .9995 purity platinum, as guaranteed by the United States Government.
The Platinum Eagle was first issued in 1997, by the United States Mint in both Uncirculated and Proof varieties. The obverse (front) of the coin is an original design by John M. Mercanti, and the original reverse (back) was designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr.
The Platinum Eagle is symbolically marked as $100 (one hundred dollars) in legal tender.
As with the other Eagles, the Platinum Eagle also comes in fractional varieties of ½ ounce, ¼ ounce and 1/10th ounce.
This coin is also eligible for placement within an IRA.
The United States Mint has temporarily ceased production of the 2009 American Platinum Eagle, in the one ounce and fractional ounce sizes. The Mint expects to resume production sometime in early 2010. We have stock of these coins from time to time, but we are limited to stock on hand. Premiums have increase dramatically on these coins, also.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
