All precious metals are weighed in troy ounces (or grams).

Below are conversion factors that will help in navigating this, perhaps, unfamiliar system.  I am indebted to Wikipedia for the majority of this information!

The old joke used to be "Which is heavier, a pound of rocks or a pound of feathers?"  Of course, they both weigh the same, in the avoirdupois system (bathroom scale) as 1 pound = 1 pound.

A troy pound is LIGHTER than an avoirdupois pound, BUT a troy ounce is HEAVIER than an avoirdupois ounce.  Go figure. Literally.

There are 12 troy ounces to a troy pound, 14 7/12 troy ounces in an avoirdupois pound.
